Merlot
Merlot
Merlot is a French variety of red wine that's grown in many wine regions. It is an early-ripening, medium-colored red grape. Merlot makes wines that are soft and subtle, yet substantial. The finest Merlots possess great depth, complexity, and longevity.
Merlot has a distinctive, herbaceous aroma quite different from the bell pepper quality of the Cabernet. It is softer in tannins and usually lower in acidity, producing a rounder, fatter, and earlier maturing wine.
The very qualities that make Merlot less powerful than Cabernet Sauvignon make it more palatable for some wine drinkers. Don't be intimidated by wine snobs. Merlot is easier to drink by itself, and it goes well with lighter foods.
